Questions:
- What TYPE of landscape material are you using?
- What is the AREA (square footage) you are going to put the landscape materials?
General Rules for TYPE of Material:
* You want GOOD COVERAGE (or complete coverage - you don't want to see the ground). For ....
- GRAVEL: You want two (2) rocks deep - so, a 3/4" rock should be figured for at least a 2" depth - an 1 1/2" rock should go at least 3" deep and so on.
- 2"-4" & 4"-8" ROCK: Use the numbers towards the bottom of the coverage chart (bottom of page) / note- 4"-8" rock is figured at an average of the rock which is a 6" depth.
- 5"-12" ROCK: Use the 5"-18" coverage also on the bottom of the coverage chart / note: 30 sq.ft. per ton covers a 3'x10' area or if you are doing a retaining wall, than one ton would do a wall approx. 3' high 10' long.
- 18"-24" ROCK: You'll get about half of the square footage as the 5"-12" rock, so approx. 15 sq.ft. per ton.
** Note: the larger the material (ex. 18"-24" ; 24"-36") the harder it is to figure coverage - It all depends on how you set the material.
- Mulch: You'll want to use the CUBIC YARD CHART. The common depth for mulch is 2"-6". The deeper the better for water retention, to eliminate weeds, and to keep bulbs safe during winter.
- Going 2 feet in depth? You'll want to figure for one foot (12" deep) and then double the sum. 1 1/2 feet in depth: figure for one-foot depth and 6" depth and add your two totals for total material needed.
- Borgert / Pavestone Products? We do not have those listed since it's different for each block and paver. Contact Levi, he's our specialist.
What is the AREA (square footage) where I want to place this material? * Square Footage is the Length (in feet) multiplied by the Width (in feet) - or if you are doing a retaining wall than Length x Height.
Examples below:
|
|
Square / Rectangle: Multiply Length times Width to get Square Footage. Then use the Coverage Chart either for depth or rock specific(ex. 4"-8") to get Tons or Yards needed.
|
|
|
Triangle: Multiply the Base times the Height (or Length times Width) divide in half for Square Footage. Then use the Coverage Chart either for depth (or rock specific) to get the Tons or Yards needed.
|
|
|
EXAMPLE:
My area is 13 feet by 25 feet.
13' multiplied by 25 feet = 325 sq. ft.
I'm going to put an 1 1/2" rock in this area. For "Complete Coverage", I'll need to go 3" in depth (two 1 1/2" rocks deep). I look to my Coverage Chart and 3" depth in Tons (this material sold by the ton) will cover 80 sq.ft. per ton.
So, I'm going to take my Square Footage (325) and divide this number by the approx. coverage (80). 325/80 = 4.06 tons (approx.) of 1 1/2" rock to cover my area.
